Water efficiency overview
The National Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) scheme was created to ensure that consumers were able to make informed and climate-conscious decisions when purchasing products for efficient water usage. The WELS rating ensures that you are choosing the most efficient water rating for your taps, dishwasher, and other kitchen fittings.
The standard covers showers, dishwashers, washing machines, toilets, urinals, taps and flow controllers. (It is required by Australian law that all of these products display a WELS label.) A general guide to follow is to select the products with the most amount of stars visible on the WELS label. The more stars a product achieves on the WELS rating, the more water efficient that particular product is. Typically, a kitchen sink mixer tap will usually have a 5 star water rating and deliver 6 litres of water per minute like the GROHE Concetto Gooseneck Pull Out Sink Mixer.
The WELS rating label is a very useful guide to water efficiency. It also includes information like the water consumption or flow figures, average water consumption per use (such as dishwasher cycles) and the average water flow per minute for taps.
